Seven nutritional rules against cancer

British scientists have set up seven nutritional rules to help prevent cancer. They are the result of an evaluation of two large, worldwide literature studies:

  • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables (at least 5 servings per day)
  • Eat a lot of cereal products, mainly in unprocessed form
  • Keep an ideal body weight (BMI 20-25) and avoid high-fat foods
  • Eat red and processed (eg roasted) meat only moderately (not more than 140 g / day)
  • Avoid high doses of vitamin supplements
  • Drinks only moderately alcohol
  • Avoid strong salted and moldy foods

It has been proven for some years that the diet plays a role to a varying extent in most cancers. Especially for colon and breast cancer, but also for lung, prostate, stomach, esophageal and pancreatic cancer, certain dietary habits are considered risky. For some factors such as obesity and high fat consumption, the connection to tumor formation is not yet confirmed. More clearly the influence of red or processed meat, alcohol and salt on the carcinogenesis. It is also certain that the abundant intake of fruits and vegetables, fiber, vitamin C and E provides protection. Because lifestyle influences cancer risk as well as nutrition, scientists also recommend cancer prevention:

  • not to smoke,
  • to move regularly,
  • not to engage in sexual intercourse with frequent partners,
  • to moderate longer direct sunlight
  • Risk factors for hepatitis B and C
