Therapy of lung cancer

Therapy of lung cancer, Through intensive research, an insight has emerged more and more in recent years: lung cancer is not equal to lung cancer. Each tumor is a complex entity with specific features such as, Eg a particular type of tissue or a concrete stage of spreading . Especially in the advanced stage, the molecular biological assessment of cancer plays an important role. If pathologists, Eg a specific mutation in the genome (genome) of the cancer cell, this can be decisive for the choice of the therapy. Therefore, such mutation tests are now routinely performed in most treatment centers . The use of so-called “biologicals” that specifically interfere with the tumor metabolism is sometimes also dependent on the tissue type. Thus the “watering can principle”, in which each patient receives the same chemotherapy in an advanced lung cancer, is increasingly moving towards individualized (or ” personalized “) therapy. The term “tailor-made therapy” is often used for this.

Since the therapy – especially surgery or lung irradiation – has an influence on the function of the lung, the age, the general health condition and accompanying diseases of the patient must also be considered. Cardiac and pulmonary function tests provide information on the possible use of certain treatment methods for health reasons. In order to be able to assess this, various specialists such as pneumologists, oncologists and surgeons work closely together.

The type of therapy depends crucially on the type of lung cancer ( non-small cell or small cell ) and the extent to which the disorder has progressed at the time of the diagnosis . Since the treatment may have an influence on the function of the lung, in addition to the age and the general state of health, above all, the patient’s lungs must be taken into account. Cardiac and pulmonary function tests provide information on the possible use of certain treatment methods for health reasons.

For the therapy of the non-small-cell lung carcinoma:

  • Therapy of non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLC)
  • In the treatment of non-small-cell lung carcinomas, local, ie locally effective therapy procedures (surgery, radiation therapy) and the entire body are available, ie systemically acting treatments (chemotherapy, targeted therapy).

  • For the therapy of small cell lung carcinoma:
  • Treatment of small cell lung carcinomas (SCLC)

In contrast to non-small-cell carcinomas, the small-cell lung carcinoma grows very rapidly and often forms early daughter tumors in other body regions. The possible therapeutic options for a patient are determined by the stage of the disease, the age, the general condition and any pre-existing conditions.

lung cancer centers

Lung cancer centers are intended to provide patients with the best treatment according to the latest scientific knowledge and therapy guidelines. Such centers are certified by the German Cancer Society. To this end, the institutions must meet strict specifications, Eg a minimum number of specially qualified specialists. In addition, at least 200 patients with lung cancer have to be treated there every year and at least 75 patients are operated on lung cancer. In this way extensive experience with the disease can be collected and continuously expanded. Treatment in the lung cancer center is interdisciplinary by pulmonary specialists, thoracic surgeons, radiation therapists, oncologists, pathologists and radiologists. They regularly participate in a tumor conference held at least weekly, in which an individual treatment plan is prepared for each patient.
